WHARF DISPUTE.

Men Working Under Protest. When a call was made for labour to load meat on the Trojan Star at eight o’clock this morning the men accepted, but demanded an extra 4d an hour. This was not granted. The men fin-«lly started work under protest at about 8.30 a m. It was reported at Lyttelton this afternoon by a man connected with shipping that the whole waterfront was seething with trouble. The latest move was a go-slow policy in the loading of meat. It is customary, when loading frozen meat with the aid of winches, to hoist about 45 carcases in each sling. In the case of the Shaw. Savill and Albion Company’s steamer Akaroa, and the Blue Star steamer Trojan Star, at present loading at Lyttelton, only 35 carcases are placed in each sling. Discharge of Goal. Although there was no hold-up on the Waikouaiti to-day it is understood that a demand was made by the men discharging her Newcastle coal for the erection of stagings from which to tip the coal into the trucks. It was stated in one quarter that the tactics of the watersiders were cost, ing the shipowners a great deal of money and there surely must be a “ show-down ” soon The companies could not go on working very much longer while so many tactics to hinder work are being taken by the men. It was rumoured this morning that it had been decided to abandon the refusal to work overtime.
