A wondrous creature is the cephalod, which dwells in the dark depths of the sea. rising to the surface so rarely that probably not more than a dozen people have seen a living specimen. A naturalist, who beheld the strange monster, described it as a luminous mass that 1 gambolled about like a phosphorescent porpoise. For the cephalod emits a light so brilliant that it would illuminate a dark room. “ Living lamps of the ocean " the cephalods have been termed. And the marvel is rendered tl.e greater by- the fact that the animals give off lights of different colours —red. blue, green, yellow. Doubtless the mam purpose of the light is to attract the creature's prey. It is also suggested that thev use their lamps for signalling to each other.
