W.C.T.U. MEETINGS.
Miss Henderson presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the W.C.T.U. Votes of sympathy were passed to Miss Sergent on the loss of her sister and to Miss' Blackwell on the illness of her brother. Several members volunteered to assist at the unemployment depot and at the coming Poppy Day street collection. Members were informed that the union would be called upon to assist in the travelling expenses of a lady organiser, who had offered her free services to the North Canterbury district union for organising work in Canterbury country districts. Mrs Pedler reported that the annual tea given to the inmates of the Jubilee Home had been a great success and was much enjoyed by all present. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Murphy for his generous gifts of new materials to be made into garments for needy children at the Fresh Air Home. Miss M. M. Stephens was appointed librarian. Papanui. The monthly meeting of the Papanui branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was hie Id on Thursday in the St Giles’ Sunday schoolrooms. Mis Graham presided over a good attendance. Mr Bandy conducted the devotions. The secretary reported on the recent garden party, as a result of which a donation had been sent to the headquarters’ fund. It was reported that material had bven purchased to be made up for children’s garments for the distressed and a committee comprising Mesdames Bandy, Hopper and Elliott was set up to superintend the making of the garments. Miss Bishop, who had represented Papanui at the recent conference, gave an interesting report on the proceedings. Mesdames Hopper and Carr thanked the speaker. Styx. At the monthly meeting of the Styx W.C.T.U., Mrs Donald presided, and Temperance factor devotions were led by Mrs Marwick. It was decided to hold a combined meeting with Belfast and Papanui at the Presbyterian Church, Papanui, on May 8, when Mrs Lowe, of the Peace and Arbitration movement, will give the address. The June meeting will take the form of a social afternoon. The day for the meeting was altered from the second Wednsday to the second Tuesday in each month. Miss Bishop, who represented Styx at th<“ Wellington Convention, read an interesting account of the convention, and was thanked by Mrs Marwick and Mrs M’Lean (Belfast). The first Band of Hope meeting will be held on the last Tuesday in May.
