“A SOUTHERN MAID.”
Bright Musical Comedy for Plaza. “ The Guardsman ” will be screened finally to-night at the Plaza Theatre. Joy-filled entertainment splashed with sunshine, radiant with romance, merry music, lilting laughter, brilliant spectacle, thrilling adventures and gay, beautifully gowned senoritas—that’s “ A Southern Maid,” the elaborate screen version of the famous musical comedy romance of sunny Spain, which will come to the Plaza Theatre tomorrow. “ A Southern Maid,” by Dion Clayton Calthrop and Harry Graham, is the ideal starring vehicle for Bebe Daniels, the lovely Hollywood star, who was specially chosen to fill the title role. Bebe Daniels plays two parts, that of the ravishing Juanita, a demure maiden of twenty years ago, who elopes with an Englishman, while subsequent scenes show her as the typically modern product of her own age, who succumbs to the charms of the Englishman’s son. Comedy, romance, and the opportunity to put over some delightful vocal numbers go to make her performance an always-to-be-remembered one. The brilliant cast supporting Bebe Daniels includes Harry Welchman, in a part similar to that in which he gained a big personal success in “ The Maid of the Mountains”; Lupino Lane, who once more asserts his laughter-making possibilities; Clifford Mollison in a romantic comedy role peculiar to his talents; Amy Veness, Morris Harvey, Hal Gordon and Nancy Brown. The supporting programme will include “ Society Cheaters,” the ’ third of the Ely Culbertson bridge “ shorts,” which are proving so popular with Plaza audiences. In this film a host Accuses a young couple of cheating. Culbertson, before an informal jury consisting of all the guests at the original game, has it replayed with his explanation of its psychological issues, thereby proving that the accused pair’s suspicious plays were all natural and fair. Walt Disney's latest Silly Symphony in colour will also be screened. Box plans at the D.I.C.
