REQUEST REFUSED.
Post Office Wanted at Brooklands. ATTITUDE OF DEPARTMENT] The request of Spencerville and Brooklands residents for a post office has been refused by the Post and Telegraph Department, according to a letter received at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council last evening The Department pointed out that the districts were too sparsely settled to provide sufficient revenue for the operation of a post office. Mr W. G. Chapman said that the rest of the county had a mail delivery. If Spencerville could not get a post office, the residents should certainly have a mail delivery. Mr W. P. Spencer: Mail carriers now come within half a mile of the district. Mr Chapman said that Mr R. W. Haw’ke, M.P., had received a similar letter. He thought the council should go further and ask for a delivery ser“l was the only one to oppose this proposal when it first came up. I knew it hadn’t an earthly,” said Mr G. G. Gardner. “The Government is harassed enough now with far more impori tant things than this paltry and pestering request. This council should show 1 greater forebearance and common sense and it would be more respected.” Mr Spencer: You are worse than Mr j Bernard Shaw. Spencerville should at' least have a delivery, for the district is only eight or nine miles from town.” ! It was finally decided to send copies of the letter to residents of the district.
