News in Brief
Incident at Cricket. An unusual incident occurred on No. 1 wicket at Eden Park, Auckland, on Saturday afternoon, when F. W. Byerley was batting for Grafton against Y.M.C.A. B\ rerley, who was delighting the spectators with an invigorating display of batting, lifted one ball into the grandstand for six. and shortly afterwards, with a still more powerful hit, struck the small tower on top of the grandstand (states the “ New Zealand Herald ”) The ball rolled down the roof and lodged in the spouting, and the game had to be temporarily suspended while another ball was obtained. This ball was treated in the same way as its predecessor shortly afterwards, but did not remain on the roof. Although Byerley was apparently using the roof as a target, a small boy subsequently climbed on to it and retrieved the original ball. ss ss Broke Record with Arm in Sling. A splendid example of an athlete triumphing over a physical disability was provided by F. E. Watt at the Auckland secondary schools' sports tournament. Watt, who is a pupil of the Auckland Grammar School, has a withered right arm, and he appeared on the track with that limb in a sling. In the senior mile championship he scored a runaway victory, and although he had no one to pace him over the latter part of the journey he succeeded in breaking the record established by him a year ago. His time on Saturday was 4min 33 3-osec, a time which bettered the previous best by no fewer than If sec Watt also ran splendidly as a member of the victorious Auckland Grammar School team in the senior relay, in which event a record time was registered.
