SERVICE RECOGNISED.
Presentation Made to Lodge Secretary. In order to pay a tribute to Mr H. E. Morgan, J.P., who has been secretary of the Loyal Pgpanui Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., for the past fifty years, a social evening was held in the Papanui Memorial Hall last evening, when the presentation of a framed photograph was made to Mr Morgan. Mr Morgan, who is 75 years of age, was born at Hadleigh. Suffolk, in 1359, and came to Canterbury with his mother in the Derwent Water in 1861. For some years he carried on fruit farming and then entered the employ of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Co, Ltd., at Belfast. Fine Record as Secretary. Mr Morgan first joined the 1.0.0. F., M.U., North Canterbury District, on September 10, 1880. at Papanui. On the opening night there were ten members, and of these he is the only one remaining a member to-day. Mr Morgan has been continually in office since joining the lodge. In 1884 he was elected secretary, and has held that position ever since. In 1890 Brother Morgan was elected Deputy Provincial Grand Master, and in 1891 Provincial Grand Master. For many years he has been a district auditor and still holds that position to-day. In his younger days Mr Morgan was a member of the .St Albans School Committee and took a keen interest in educational matters. He was also a member of the St Albans Borough Council for a long period. Since resigning his position with the Canterbury Frozen Meat Co., Ltd., some years ago, he has been living in retirement. There was a large attendance of members of the Order at the social last evening, including Brother T. J. Archbold. Grand Master of the New Zealand branch of the Order; Brother F. Cole, District G.M.; Brother A. Gow, P.D.G.M.; and Brother R. Merriman, District Treasurer. Excellent Work for Order. In proposing the health of the guest of the evening Mr W. J. Mulholland said that no doubt all considered the honour of P.P.G.M. to be the highest to be obtained in the Order, but Brother Morgan had attained a greater distinction in having been secretary for fifty years. In making a presentation of a framed photograph of the recipient, Mr Frank. Sisson, one of the oldest members of the lodge, said Brother Morgan’s ability and honesty had never been surpassed. t Mr Morgan, in reply, said that his years of work had been a pleasure. Everyone needed a hobby and his had been secretaryship. He traced the history of the lodge and thanked all for the honour done him. Other toasts were honoured.
