FALLING REVENUE.
Australian Tramway Systems. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, April 10. “All the Australian tramway system's are faced with the same problem as Auckland —falling revenue,” commented Mr. G. Grey Campbell, a member of the Auckland Transport Board, who returned by the Mariposa after attending a tramway conference in Sydney, at which all the Australian States with the exception of Western Australia were represented. “Every authority,” he said, “is endeavouring to find ways and means of overcoming present difficulties, but there is no talk of scrapping the systems. As a matter of fact, Sydney has just ordered 200 new cars of a different pattern to those now in use. Their design will follow closely that of the Auckland tram. Other States have built do luxe cars with a view to attracting more passengers. Sydney is experimenting with trackless trams just now, but the tests had not proceeded far enough when I left for any opinion to be expressed.” Mr. Campbell said that Melbourne had set up a milk council similar to the Auckland body, and last week conferences were being held with the various interests with a view to price fixation, distribution, etc.
