RAILWAY BEAUTIFYING.
Line From Christchurch to Lyttelton. Endeavours to arrange with the Railway Department for the beautify ing of the railway line from Lyttelton to Christchurch will be made by the Christchurch Beautifying Association. Mr J. O. Jameson, a member of a sub-committee set up to go into the matter, wrote to last evening’s meeting of the association stating that on an inspection he was agreeably surprised to find that the number of backyards and outbuildings along the line was not as great as he had expected: moreover, there were practically none between Heathcote and Woolston. He suggested, therefore, that in the meantime the association should confine its attention to the line between Woolston and Opawa or Linwood. However, he presumed nothing could be done without the sanction of the Railway Department, especially as regards the kind of trees or shrubs to be planted as there was not a great deal of room for larger types to develop, excepting perhaps poplars. The chairman (Mr R. B. Owen) said that the District Traffic Manager (Mr E. S. Brittenden) was sympathetic to the proposal and had suggested a conference with the District Engineer. Mi Owen added that the Bryndwr people were also desirous of the line in that district being beautified. It was eventually decided that the sub-committee mentioned should approach the District Traffic Managel- - the District Fhigineer with a view to having something done similar to the beautifying carried out along the line at Addington.
