ON THREE WHEELS

Workers’ Alarming Ride in Rail Van. Three English railway workers travelling in a guard’s van attached to a Hawick goods train had an alarming experience when a wheel came off near Hassendean station while the train was going at full speed in the dark (says the London “Daily Chronicle ”). At one point the van lurched over at an angle of 45 degrees, and nearly shot the occupants over a viaduct. The van leapt several feet into the air, and severely buffeted James Thomson. the guard, and his companions. Thomson tried in vain to attract the attention of the driver by waving a hand lamp, and as the train was passing through Belses station the van fouled the points, tore up several Yards of track, and hit the platform. The men were about to jump from the train when the driver noticed showers of sparks from the van and stopped.
