DELIGHTFUL PICTURE.
“ The Good Companions,” the talking screen adaptation of J. B. Priestley’s famous best-seller of the same name, began what promises to be a most successful return season at the Grand Theatre on Saturday. It is a delightful show, so different from anything previously seen in the city. The large cast includes Edmund Gwenn, John Geilgud, Mary Gl> r nne and Jessie Matthews. “ The Good Companions ” is everybody’s picture, but its main appeal lies in the faithful portrayal of distinctive types, familiar to anyone who knows England. Priestley’s wellbeloved characters are all there, and their ups and downs are shared by the audience with an unusual depth of feeling, while, t y the camera’s magic, they travel through the glorious English countryside, shiver in sympathy on dismal railway platforms, and play in imagination be‘ore small audiences to the music of tinny pianos. An attractive all-British supporting programme is also screened.
