Asparagus Beds.
A Garden Corner.
IS always a lot of doubt as to the treatment to be accorded existing beds of this profitable vegetable. Just now, these beds will be a mass of ferny foliage 4ft high, with their abundant seed berries turning from yellow to red. To prevent these berries dropping and forming another colony of plants on the bed is the .important first step. Therefore all growth can be cut of! at about six inches above the ground, and the simplest procedure is to burn the lot. Then go over the bed, remove all weeds and give the surface a light forking to loosen the ground. Where strawy manure, lawn clippings o.r leaf mould is available, a three or four inch covering can be spread over and left until midwinter. By July this will have almost disappeared, and can make way for a liberal spread of Kainit and super in August. Of course, it must not be forgotten that the berried plumes of asparagus are very ornamental, and the best of them can be saved for house decoration for the winter. T. D. LENNIE.
