MODEST MRS SHAW.
Husband Will Not Speak for Her. Attempts to interview Mrs Bernard Shaw during her tour of the Dominion with her famous husband have ignominiously failed. It has been perfectly clear that Mrs Shaw is a modest woman with a strong distaste for publicity. On Saturday it was shown that Mr Shaw respects this modesty, for he refused to be drawn into a discussion on Mrs Shaw’s views of New Zealand. Dr H. T. Thacker asked Mr Shaw how his wife was enjoying her trip. Mr Shaw said he did not know. Dr Thacker said he asked because it had been said that Mr Shaw suppressed his wife, and would not allow her to give her views. “ Good God! ” gasped Mr Shaw, with his hand to his brow. “ Any person who declares that a husband suppresses his wife has not been married.” “ Well,” said Dr Thacker, still on the attack, .“ has Mrs Shaw expressed no views to you about the trip?” “ My wife is a woman of strong mentality, and expressed strong opinions to me twelve or thirteen times a day,” replied Mr Shaw, still evading the question. “ What a wonderful side-stepping half-back you would have made if you had been born in New Zealand,” sighed Dr Thacker, giving up the question as hopeless. Somebody else asked Mr Shaw whether he was enjoying the trip. To this he replied that he had been touring for a month so far. It was impossible to enjoy oneself continuously for a month. When the weather was fine and all went well, it might be most enjoyable, but at other times one might be sorry ever to have set foot in the place.
