P.R. SYSTEM TO GO.

Effect of Labour Party’s Decision. The Labour party’s abandonment of the principle of proportional voting will inevitably lead to the Christchurch City Council's reversion to the majority voting system, according to the Mayor, (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.). Mr Sullivan said on Saturday that he regarded it as inevitable that a motion would be brought before the council for the repeal of proportional representation at the municipal elections. Moreover, it appeared certain that the motion would be carried, in view of the decision of the Labour conference and in view of the attitude towards the system the Citizen's Association had taken up in the past. Mr Sullivan said that it was impossible for him to say anything more definite at the moment or to state his own convictions. The voting system was for the council to decide.
