Technical College Agreement.

AGREEMENT has been reached be- - tween the Board of Governors of the Christchurch Technical College and the Minister of Education (the Hon R. The modified scheme provides for an expenditure of about £II,OOO, which will be subject to the Unemployment Board’s subsidy. At last evening’s meeting of the board new terms offered by the Minister as a result of an interview which a deputation from the board had with him at Wellington, on Thursday, were accepted, but three members, Messrs G. E. Franklin, A. H. Scales and J. J. Hurley asked that their dissent from the agreement be recorded. Minister’s Terms. . new terms offered by the Minister were contained in the following letter dated April s: In connection with the representations made to me to-day, on behalf of your board by Messrs T. W. West, A. G. Williams and J. W. Graham, I have to say that I am prepared to modify the requirements of my letter of March. 6, with regard to the spending of £3700 on equipment, library, etc., for the Christchurch Technical School, as follows: ‘That the board, in conjunction with the department, spends forthwith the su «^ n on equipment, library, etc. •J hat any amoun t in excess of £IOOO paid by the Unemployment Board to the Christchurch Technical School Board of Governors in connection with the building of the memorial hall shall be spent forthwith as part of the £3700 for equipment, etc. Ph a t the board does its utmost to liquidate the £IOOO mortgage at the earliest possible moment. That any amount between the lowest tender for the memorial hall and the board available for the building of the memorial hall, shall be spent in the equipment of the school” The Minister’s letter and the repo-t of the - deputation were taken in committee, and gave rise to a lengthy discussion. Plans to be Modified. When the board resumed Mr Hurley said that plans for a building to cost £12,000 had been drawn and he asked if they could be modified to suit the sum of £ll,OO now available. The chairman (Mr M’Gregor B Wright') £a l d h r believed tha * could be done. Mr J. W. Graham said that the Unemployment Board had extended bv three months the time in which the building subsidy would be available, and he believed that the working drawings and specifications could be prepared within the period allowed.
