LIMITED IMPORTS.
For Better Clearances of N.Z. Wheat. PURCHASE BOARD'S ACTION. Action to limit the importation of flour and wheat into New Zealand has been taken by the Wheat Purchase Board in the hope that a better clearance of Dominion products will be effected. The board has entered into a contract with the millers, who have undertaken not to mix in more than 5 per cent of imported flour in the next six months, and 2k per cent for the six months following. North Island millers are now using about 10 per cent of imported flour. North Island suppliers of flour, particularly, have found themselves in a difficult position from overseas competition, so the board has decided to pay a subsidy of 15s a ton on all flour sold in the north. Most of the Dominion’s wheat and flour imports come from Canada and Australia, and, in spite of the protection given by the sliding scale of duties, 750,000 to 1,000,000 bushels are imported yearly from these countries. New Zealand millers find it necessary to blend imported with New Zealand flour to get a satisfactory loaf.
