MAE WEST AGAIN.

“ I’nS no Angel ” Coming to Majestic.

“Love, Honour and Oh, Baby!’’ will conclude its season at the Majestic Theatre to-morrow night. “ I’m No Angel,” Mae West’s second starring vehicle, will come to the Majestic Theatre on Monday. Here is an actress of remarkable talent who has specialised in the portraying of the adventuress, and in doing so has evolved a type so outstanding and distinctive that it is impossible to separate it from its creator. Not long ago Christchurch picture patrons saw Mae West in “ She Done Him Wrong.” In her new film she has far greater scope and rises to greater heights. “ I’m No Angel ” features both unusual and improbable characters, but these come and go through equally unlikely adventures merely to enhance the magnetic personality of a woman who dominates the story and fascinates the audience from beginning to end. Even her peculiar vulgarity has its attractiveness, for she is through it all impressively yet artistically vulgar. As Tira, vaudeville artist in a travelling canvas show, Mae West makes her first impression on her screen audience as surely as she makes it upon the crowd which swarms into her tent. Her association with a light-fingered male leads to complications and an assault in her room, the arrest of her companion, and the necessity for her raising money in order to avid the grip of the law. The dialogue is full of snappy retorts, cute philosophies, and sayings catchy enough to be remembered and repeated. They create roars of laughter at times, but occasionally a subtle one slips by almost unnoticed. “ I’m No Angel ” will win popularity particularly because it is a type that departs markedly from the usual. Box plans at the D.I.C.
