Topics of the Turf

AND news from everywhere

are due at 8 o’clock to-night for the Nelson JockeyClub’s meeting. * * * * The Amberley Racing Club will take nominations for its meeting on Tuesday. * * * * Acceptances for the Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Monday. * * * * * The Greymouth Jockey Club will bring its meeting to a close to-morrow. • * « > The Avondale Jockey Club and the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club will provide sport to-morrow in the North Island. * * * * Master Brierly and Jonathan, the star performers at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, will be in action in the principal event at Avondale tomorrow. * * * * The two-year-old handicap at the Avondale meeting to-morrow has drawn a good field, though there was a shortage in this department at Ellerslie. * * * * While the fillies Burnish, Gay Blonde and Variant claimed the chief two-vear-old honours of the season as a result of the latest racing, Riccarton stables possess three colts who may be good next season. They are Custodian, Marcus Cicero and Master Reynard. S?t * * * Most of the Riccarton stables are represented in the excellent list of nominations for the South Canterbury meeting, to be held on Saturday, April 21. BFroMixo MORE SOLID. Pladie is developing more solid form and he won well at the Wairarapa meeting on Monday. When trained by L. G. Morris at Marton he was responsible for some exceptional showings in private, but although he won races he did not, in public, come up to all expectations. He has yet to beat a good field, but time appears to have done something for him and it should not be long before he gets another stake. • * * * The nominations for the hurdle race at the South Canterbury meeting include seven of the horses who raced over the brush fences at Riccarton. * * * * The field for the Teschemaker Handicap, the chief -event at the South Canterbury meeting, looks like being one of the best seen on the Washdyke course for some time past. * * * * The Auckland two-year-old, Royal Appellant, was purchased last week by Dr M. G. Pezaro, for whom he raced at Easter, but he will remain in J. Buchanan’s stables at Ellerslie. A SOLID HACK. As the result of his solid finishing run in the Eden Handicap on the first day at Ellerslie the public elected Senior favourite in the Nelson Handicap on Monday, but he failed to finish in the money. He was .made plenty of use of in the early stages of the race, and as a result did not finish on as well as he usually does. Senior, who is to race at Avondale, is a solid type of hack, of whom better things can be expected before the season is over. * .* * * There was an inquiry after the H. O. Nolan Handicap, at the Auckland meeting on Monday. The evidence showed that Epigram, in trying to run off the course, interfered with King March, who fell, bringing Takakua down. No blame was attached to anyone. Sea Fox fell in the Islington through getting on to the heels of another horse. This incident was found to be accidental. FOR MELBOURNE. Arrangements have been completed by Mr W. R. Kemball for his private trainer, W. Hawthorne, to transfer activities from Trentham to Melbourne with twelve horses, and also the stable jockeys, W. E. Shand and G. Dick. With the arrival of Hawthorne in Melbourne, Mr Kemball will have two trainers in that centre, G. Jones having been located at Caulfield now for some two years. Hawthorne will leave for Melbourne by the Wanganella next week. Mr Kemball will maintain his stud here, and will also continue to have horses trained by W. M’Conkey at Trentham, and G. Neich at Clareville. HOKITIKA WINNERS. The winning owners at the Westland Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Hokitika were as follows:—M. R. Spiers £IOO, G. Linton £7O, A. E. Blackler £55, W. S. Clarke £SO, J. Stewart £SO, R. Adamson £SO, H. P. Hopkins £4O, A. B. Spiers £2O, C. S. Neville £ls, E. M. Sheady £l4, J. Adamson £lO. T . J. Anisy £lO, J. B. Pearson £lO. H. P. O’Reilly £lO, T. G. Browne £lO, B. Winchester £lO, J. P. Lowe £7. T. M’Guire £6, W. T. Blackmun £5, S. G. Holmes £3; total, £545. AN IMPROVER. King Musk was improved by his race on the first day of the Auckland meeting and he showed good form in the Nelson Handicap on Monday. He did not begin with his usual dash, and consequently was not too well placed in the early stages of the race. However, he finished very fast once he got an opening, but Lagoon, who had a clear run throughout, was too good for him on the day. Now that King Musk has shown that he is returning to form again he should be worth keeping in mind during the rest of the season. He may be in the money at Avondale.

K. Voitre did not accompany R. Hatch to Greymouth, but returned north in order to ride at the Avondale meeting to-morrow and Monday. ARAUNAH’S SUCCESS. After i an absence of nearly two months from racing, the grey Hunting Song gelding Araunah made an exhibition cf a fair field in the Sherwood High-weight Handicap at Moonee Valley on March 24. Araunah went to Melbourne from New Zealand about two years ago. , COSTLY FAILURES. Rogilla is a great horse, but in the Melbourne Cup and the A.J.C. Doncaster Handicap he must have cost Australian punters in the mass a huge sum. Many people regarded him as next door to a certainty for each of these events, but he failed decisively in both. TO RACE AT AVONDALE. Exaggeration was not started at the Auckland meeting, but there is nothing amiss with the daughter of Lucullus, who is thriving well on the work allotted her, and will race at Avondale. On two occasions recently she has been galloped over a sprint distance at Ellerslie, and has shown that she still retains her speed. This mare has previously won on the Avondale course, and her prospect of earning more stake money at the coming meeting appears good. WORTH WATCHING. Although Lagoon has been successful on several occasions around the country meetings within the last couple of months, her win in the Nelson Handicap at Ellerslie on Monday clearly indicated that she is an improved hack. She took charge after the field had gone a couple of furlongs and won impressively, running out the mile in solid style. As customary with the majority of Musketoon’s progeny, Lagoon displays plenty of grit and is likely to do much better with age. She is due to make her next appearance at Avondale, and if she. repeats her Ellerslie form she will be hard to beat. SMART SPRINTER. King Ford displayed his customary speed m the Huia Handicap at Ellerslie, and although Jonathan beat him comfortably at the finish he was by no means disgraced. The race was run in reccu-d time for the course, for which King Ford was mainly responsible, as he was out making the pace from the start. J. F. Tutchen has the King l-upin gelding in tip-top condition, and he he has not been over-raced this season, he will be dangerous in future events. He is engaged at AvonHOOTING BY RADIO. Hooting has been quite a popular pastime on Sydney and Melbourne racecourses in recent weeks, but the course patrons are not being allowed to have the demonstrations all to themselves. With great glee a Sydney j man, who did not the Warwick Farm meeting o n March 24, tells of how he listened to a wireless description of the Chipping Norton Stakes in a suburban hotel. “ When Silver Scorn won, he relates, “ somebody cried, Rub her out!' That started it. The crowd first packed round the receiving set and gave as good a display of 'looting and boo-ing as any racecourse crowd could achieve.”—Sydney “ Referee.” RACING FIXTURES April 6, 7—Greymouth J.C. [HAWKE’S BAY RACES.

Second Autumn Meeting at Hastings. TO-MORROW’S FIELDS. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, April 6. Improved fields have met the acceptance for the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s second autumn meeting to-mor-row, with additional horses from the Feilding and Wairarapa meetings to clash with the form revealed last weekend at Hastings and at Waipukurau. weather outlook is good and the day’s sport promises to be most successful. This club is sticking to the win-and-place system of betting. The item of main importance is the President’s Handicap, run over the same distance as the Hawke’s Bay and Waipukurau Cups, so there should be ample form to guide investors. Aesculus has been lifted 121 b for his last Saturday’s narrow win, and as in the past he has not been too consistent, he may not be the choice of bettors tomorrow. At least it may be said that his task on this occasion will be very much harder. Two who are preferred to him are the Waipukurau Cup winner Gainsfid, who was third last Saturday at Hastings, and the Hastings win favourite though unplaced Blue Boy. Blue Boy may well make amends here, for he is meeting Aesculus and Gainsfid at 141 b and 61b better terms respectively. Emotion, who failed over shorter distances at Feildmg, has yet to win at a middle journey but Stitch and Sylvan Dell, respectively second in the Hawke’s Bay and Waipukurau Cups, have likely lightweight chances. There is a very useful field of sprinters m the Okawa Handicap, and Lull us, a \y inner at both Hastings and Waipukurau, must again find favour, despite his 121 b rise on last Saturday’s weight. lhe Feilding winner Royal Hunting may be his most menacing opponent, but .Slippery and Speed are also distinct possibilities at their weights and on - Waipukurau running trr!, Ri n De ’ lt reserved ’ might also be troublesome, as at 221 b worse terms there she ran Cullus to half a length. wJnH' tWO hack ?. vent s are the Akiho Handicap, one mile, and the Twyford rnnf^r CaP ' sl * fu , rlon g E - In the former T .
