PETROL RAIDERS.

Thieves Are Active in Wellington. Wellington motorists have been the victims of petrol thieves during the past few weeks, according to the Wellington Automobile Club. Cases reported to the club by members state that scores of gallons have been siphoned out of cars parked in the streets near picture theatres and dance halls. Though the value of the petrol stolen may. be comparatively small, the inconvenience caused is considerable. Mr J. S. Hawkes, secretary of the Canterbury Automobile Association, stated this morning that similar cases had occurred in Christchurch, but were not nearly as prevalent as in Wellington. The suppression of thefts of this kind was a very difficult matter. The thieves were quick workers, and it was impossible to have all the cars parked in the city under observation. Patrolmen of the Wellington Automobile Club also report that there is a growing danger to motorists from bottles thrown out of cars. The Hutt Road and the road to Porirua are particularly affected. A case of this kind occurred near Christchurch recently. Fourteen beer bottles were thrown from a car, and although they landed at the side of the road, they nevertheless constituted a danger to motorists, as they could easily be moved out on to the roadway.
