GIRL GUIDES’ PARTY.

Thirteenth Birthday of Sumner Troop.

The thirteenth birthday of the Sumner Guides was celebrated at Sumner in the Presbyterian Sunday Schoolroom last night, with the usual'biennial tea party and social. Miss E. Fountain Barber, apologising for the unavoidable absence of the Mayoress, Mrs W. H. Nicholson, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. The programme consisted of competitions for prizes presented by two ladies of Sumner, games, concert items and campfire songs. It concluded with the lighting of the thirteen candles on a birthday cake donated by Mrs Fountain Barber, and the serving of supper to all those present. The candles were lit by the youngest of the Guides, Betty Hines, and the beautiful cake was cut by Lorrie Da we. Items were contributed by Betty Hines, piano solo: Pat Hill, song": Hazel Horgen, recitation; and Frances Phillips and Hazel Horgen, vocal duet. Cooking competitions judged by Mrs K. G. Shrimpton resulted as follows: Pamela Tish (cake) and Pat Ellison (scones). In the sewing section Mrs H. J. Marriner awarded the prizes to Myone Whykes and Joy Buttle, equal (knitting), Pat Ellison (original article) and Willis Short. The smelling competition was won by Mesdames G. K. Shrimpton and Horgan. Members of the committee present were: Mesdames H. J. Marriner, K. G. Shrimpton and R. N. C. . Hill, and apologies were received from Mesdames W. 11. Nicholson, S. C. Booth, S. Otley, R. Henley and Fountain Barber, and the Revs A. Orange and W. R. Martin. The badge examiners were represented by Mesdames R. N. C. Hill, Gale and Miss Barker. Others present were: Mesdames Dawe, H. Buttle, Plominski, G. Lawson and Miss Farmer.
