Final payments for the Great Northern Oaks, St Leger and Champagne Stakes are due by the same hour HAS NOT EARNED IT. On his form this season, Red Sun certainly does not deserve another trip to Australia, but he is likely to have one all the same. His owner-trainer, J. W. Lowe, intends to winter in Australia again this year, and he will probably take the gelding with him. TWO-VEAR-OLD’S FATAL INJURY The Weaver, a two-year-old colt by Paper Money from Piquant, broke a leg and had to be destroyed. He was trained by A. D. Webster for Mr E Martin and was regarded as promising * * * * George Price saw only one day’s racing at Flemington. He became ill after the first day and was confined to his room for several days. He returned to Sydney before the fixture ended. S. Barr will have horses racing at two meetings this week. Some Shamble, Fleeting Glance and Quietly are a useful trio for Oamkru Fairway, Courtyard, Colossian and Cheap Money will be at Otautau and will remain in Southland for the Riverton Racing Club’s meeting at Easter. It is understood that Silver Sight will miss Camaru, but wfill go south for Riverton engagements. FROM GOOD FAMILY. Walton Park, the winner of the Champion Hack Cup at Trentham, was bred by his owner-trainer, B. Burgess, and is a five-year-old gelding, the first foal of his dam, Kilceit, a mare bred by Mr H. Hassall, by Kilboy from Conceit, who is also the dam of Egotism and Oddity. Conceit is a halfsister to the former Greenwood champion Emperador. Walton Park, who is by Cape Horn, is a plain-looking gelding, but he has always shown galloping ability and stamina, and it was his staying power that won for him on Saturday. COUNT PALATINE Count Palatine, the only North j Island acceptor for the C.J.C. Great Autumn Handicap? is trained Tiv L; G Morris at Marton for Mr T. A. Duncan. He is a seven-year-old gelding by Paladin from Per Arma, an English mare by Picton (son of Orvieto), from Perush by Persimmon. Per Arma was also the dam of Martarma. Count Palatine is engaged at Awapuni this afternoon. Up to that race he had started forty-five times for 5 wins, 7 seconds, 9 thirds and 24 times unplaced. In prize money he has earned £1833. Originally Count Palatine was raced by Mr C. Elgar, and after that owner’s death by his widow. As a three-year-old Count Palatine ran second to Honour in the New Zealand Derby. At four years he won over eight and a half furlongs at Wanganui, and his minor placings included second in the King Edward Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Ellerslie, third in the Wellington Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, and third in the C.T.C. Metropolitan, one mile and a half. In the Riccarton event he carried 7 10 and was beaten, head and head, by Mv Own, 7.3, and Star Stranger, 9.4 At five and six years he did little racing, only having four starts in the two seasons. He has been out twelve times this season prior to to-day for 3 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third and 6 times ■unplaced. His last three starts have produced a second to True Shaft in the Marton Cup and wins in the Earle Stakes at Wanganui and the Rangitikei Cup. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS Additional riding engagements for Oamaru include:—A. Messervy, Wonderful, Gustavo. lan’s March. Effozel; W. J. Pascoe, Star Raider: 11. Turner, Arrowmaid; M. Kellow, of Melbourne, will go to Sydney for the A.J.C. autumn meeting and immediately after the close of that fixture will embark for England with a view to seeing the Test matches. He will be accompanied on the English trip by Mr W. J. Smith (a member of the “ F. Smithden ” part- , nership) and by Mr Warwick Armstrong, the former Australian Eleven captain. They will return to Australia for the spring racing. It reads an attractive programme. ANOTHER CASUALTY Chokebore Lodge has had its full share of casualties this season and Rocket adds another to the list. He has developed trouble in a suspensory ligament and will require a long spell.

Friday Night, the two-year-old brother to Phar Lap, is showing promise in his work at Riccarton.

The atmosphere of racing has greatly changed in the last 20 years, and I am sorry to say (says “Chiron” in the “ Australasian ”) the change has been for the worse. Nobody is given credit for being honest. A sinister interpretation is placed upon the most innocent incidents. If a leading performer is reported to be amiss before a race it is now the custom rather than the exception for people to ask, “ Is it genuine, or merely an attempt to bluff everybody so that they can get a better price?” SALTSPRAYS RELATIVES.

Saltspray, who is likely to be taken back to his native land, Australia, to race in the near future, has required both time and patience, but his connections are now reaping the reward. He ran a dead-heat for first in the Beerescourt Handicap at Te Rapa on March 8, won the Rangiriri Highweight at Te Rapa on March 10, won the Silverstream Handicap at Trentham on Friday, and was runner-up to. Ranelagh in the Hutt Handicap on Saturday. He is trained at Levin by R. Ward for Mrs S. E. Boyle, wife of Mr C. Boyle, a well-known Wellington supporter of racing. Now a five-year-old, Saltspray is a chestnut gelding by the Sunstar horse Saltash, sire of Strephon. Saltash, a brother to Buchan, won the Eclipse Stakes, 1 of £8735, in England. His dam, ITamoaze, was by Torpoint (son of Trenton) from Maid of the Maid (daughter of Sceptre and dam of Craig-an-Eran) by Cyllene. Aries, dam of Saltash, was a brilliant sprinter. Her successes included the Challenge and Carrington Stakes at Randwick. Her sister, Poitrina, won, among other races,, the Oakleigh Plate and A.J.C. Easter Stakes. In a high-weight at Rosehillshe carried list 91b and won. Ingoda, a half-sister to Aries, produced King Ingoda, winner of the Melbourne and Williamstown Cups. Queen Ingoda, another half-sister to Aries, produced the Auckland Cup winner Corinax. Aries was by The Welkin (sire of Gleaming) from Armigera, (half-sister to Ringlet and Armlet) by Hotchkiss (son of Musket) from Armilla (winner of the C.J.C. Oaks) by Castor from Necklace by Musket. It will be observed that Saltspray lacks nothing in the point of pedigree and he is likely to go on developing as a racehorse. RACIXO FIXTURES. March 21, 22 Manawatu R.C. March 23, 24—Oamaru J.C.
