MAN SENT TO PRISON.
“Too Much Cycle Thieving,” Says Magistrate. “ There is too much bicycle thieving going on. If you had not altered the bicycle I might have made it lighter,” said Mr 11. P. Lawry, S.M., to-day, in sending Horace Leonard Brown, a labourer, aged 34 years, to prison for six weeks. Brown was charged in the Police Court with stealing a bicycle and two pairs of shoes, valued at £8 12s 6d, the property of Charles Henry Franklin. Senior-Sergeant Fox said that the bicycle, with a parcel of shoes on it, was stolen from outside Mr Franklin's office. Two days ago Brown had been called to the police station on another matter. Constable Dunn, “ who was always on the hunt for stolen bicycles,” examined Brown’s machine, and as a result interviewed Brown. Brown said that he had found the bicycle near Rakaia. The senior-sergeant added that the shoes had been sold to a second-hand dealer. The transfers had been removed from the bicycle and the handles widened and put on an outrigger.
