QUAKE-PROOF BUILDINGS

Wider Powers for Pahiatua and Dannevirke. Per Press Association. PAIIIATUA, March 21. The Napier building inspector, who was appointed by the Borough Council to superintend quake reconstruction and inspect all plans and specifications, has been given sole power to decide what shall be dose. It is stated that it is probable an Order-in-Council will be made to enable the boroughs of Dannevirke and Pahiatua to enforce the reconstruction of buildings in accordance with earth-quake-resisting principles. Amended returns show that 633 chimneys in the borough needed repair, and many have been put in hand, keeping tinsmiths and bricklayers busy. The debris and wreckage in the main street is rapidly vanishing, but memories of the fateful fifth of March with its midnight terrors will long remain. A further communication has been received by local bodies from Mr Coates regarding the question of financing necessitous cases by way of loans on easy terms. Mr Coates said that those residents who were in a position to repair the damage themselves or who could obtain finance for the purpose would be expected to do so.
