ANNUAL CONVERSAZIONE.

Private View Night at Art Gallery. FORMAL SOCIAL EVENT. The original idea in the minds of the executive of the Canterbury Society of Arts in holding a private view night each year prior to opening the society's exhibition, was doubtless to give its members and their friends the special privilege of an advance inspection of the pictures The occasion has grown, however, into something more than a viewing and criticising of pictorial art. It is regarded as an “ event ” in the social calendar and marks the first big formal gathering of the year. Friends meet and greet each other again after the holiday session, and in little groups drift round the galleries, pausing before the various collections or an individual exhibit. Last evening’s annual conversazione and private view at the old Art Gallery was in no wise different from its predecessors. There was a large attendance. both rooms of the gallery being crowded from an early hour. Pot plants and maples lent their grace to the rooms.
