STRONG PROTEST.
Unfit Men on Unemployed Relief. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, February 23. A strong protest against the proportion of unfit men allotted to the City Council for work in Invercargill, while able-bodied men were sent to the country, was voiced at a conference to-day of representatives of local bodies. The meeting also criticised the constitution of the present local Unemployment Committee and the powers placed in the hands of the certifying officer. It was resolved that representations be made to the Unemployment Board protesting against the proportion of unfit men allotted to the City Council and protesting further that the council was limited in the class of work on which it was allowed to use relief labour, restrictions which did not appear to exist in the country. It was stated that the City Council could find more work if these restrictions were lifted. It was decided to make representations to the Unemployment Board that the local Unemployment Committee, in the opinion of the meeting, should comprise representatives of local bodies of the district and of the Southland Relief Workers’ Association. The following motion in regard tD the stand-down week was * carried: “ That this meeting recommends our respective authorities, in view of the creation of a stand-down week, to provide extra work during the standdown week at unemployed rates cf pay.”
