NURSE MAUDE APPEAL.

Public Respond in Generous Manner. The first public appeal for funds to meet the running expenses of the Nurse Maude Association met with a generous response to-day. There were plenty of willing helpers, and they brought their boxes back to the headquarters at the old Art Gallery, Durham Street, with substantial amounts, consisting of copper, silver and sometimes ten shilling or pound notes. The people of Christchurch are well aware of the splendid work done by Nurse Maude, and therefore they were ready to give, and give liberally in many cases, to help on the cause. A novel method of collecting was used in Cathedral Square, in front of the Cathedral. Passers-by were asked to place coppers or silver coins on a full-length portrait of Nurse Maude. This novel idea was very successful, And by 11.30 a.m. £ll had been placed on the board. Several notes were pinned on to the top of the board. The appeal for produce to be sold at the market at the Art Gallery met with a wonderful response. A wide selection of cakes, pot plants, flowers, produce and meat was placed on the stalls ready for sale. The amount of goods collected was so great that it was decided to continue the market tonight, for it was unlikely that the goods cc-uld be sold during the day. The meat stall is supplied by the local meat companies, the produce stall mainly by the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, and staffed by the Nurse Maude Bridge Committee, the cake and sweet stall is supplied and staffed by the Women’s Institute, and a flower stall is supplied arfd staffed by Miss Rose Tabart and helpers. Side shows and entertainments will be conducted by the Postmen's Social Committee this evening, and will be continued to-morrow evening. The sum of £2OO had been collected by 1 o’clock.
