He was raced on the flat at the Marton summer meeting at New Year, winning a ladies’ bracelet, and this was his first outing for a long time. He is engaged in the hurdle race on the first day of the Te Aroha meeting, but there are a number of more seasoned horses than he in. the. event and they should keep him busy if he is started. Carfex is a good horse when at his best, and his form recently has been most encouraging. At the Egmont meeting this month he finished third in the Cup, while in the Tcmks Stakes on the second day he was second. He then went on to the Taranaki meeting and annexed the Cup in good style. Carfex is reported to have done well since then, and he is sure to run a good race if started in the Ilerries Memorial Cup at Te Aroha. * * * ❖ P. M’Grath has erected some brush fences in one of his paddocks, and Bell Hill was schooled over them yesterday, giving a great exhibition of jumping. He shapes as if he may make a useful steeplechaser in the winter and as a preliminary he is being got ready for the brush steeplechases at the Canterbury Jockey Club's autumn meeting. * * * # The three-year-old Versant, who paid a sensational dividend in the spring, is again in work at Ellerslie after a spell necessitated by his going amiss. GRAND JURY. Grand Jury has raced most consistently during the last few months, and he should be one of the fittest horses to go to the post for the Herries Memorial Cup. At the Manawatu summer meeting at Christmas time he was second in the Cup, one mile and a half, and occupied a similar position in the Liverpool Handicap, nine furlongs. Going on to Stratford, he won the Cup, one mile and a quarter, and the Malone Memorial Handicap, nine furlongs. His next start was at Trentham, where he accounted for the Wellington Cup, one mile and a half, and also the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, carrying Bst 21b in the last-named instance. Cruachan, who is top-weight with lOst 91b in the Ruakaka Hurdles at Te Aroha to-morrow, won this event twelve months ago w r ith a similar impost. He has not done much racing over hurdles recently, but his form on the flat has been consistent, for he has been placed on three occasions in highweight events since the beginning of the year. Cruachan is a proficient jumper, and as he is a very fit horse at present he should show up at Te Aroha, especially if the ground happens to be on the soft side.
