TRAMWAY SERVICES.
Improvements on Papanui Line Requested. At last night’s meeting of the Papanui Progress League, Air G. T. Thurston, member of the Riccarton district, which includes Papanui, met the members of the league. Mr VV. J. Boyce presided over a large attendance. Mr Thurston said the board was out to popularise the trams and to its credit 41,000 more people had used the trams during January than during a corresponding period last year. The league could do a great deal for the board in the matter of getting the Highways Board to distribute its funds to all the bodies responsible for the maintenance of the roads. At present the Tramway Board received nothing. Air J. Scofield asked for the support of lower fares for the Brvndwr bus. The price at present was fivepence, which was too much. A more frequent service was needed and a bus on holidays. Air W. G. Chapman asked for the restoration of a service to X T orthcote. There was now a much larger population and a more adequate service was needed. Mr Thurston said that the matters discussed would be brought before the board. The question of early trams on Sunday would also be considered. The meeting decided to write to the board asking that the proposals be carried out.
