RECORDS BROKEN.

Metcalfe in Form at Waimate Sports. AUSTRALIANS OPEN TOUR. (Special to the “ Star.”) WAIMATE, February 21. The visiting Australian athletes, J. P. Metcalfe. E. W. Barwick and T. S. Hampson, made their initial appearance in New Zealand at the sports here today. New Zealand champions also competed. The weather was fine and sunny and there was a good attendance of the public, but a strong, gusty southerly and a heavy track did not provide the best conditions. Barwick was defeated in the mile event by A. Dobbs (Waimate) off 90yds. Harwich's time of 4min 32sec was not comparable with his record of 4min 16 4-ssec. and his recent Australian performance of 4min 20sec. Barwick, who is the holder of the Australian mile record and is credited with being Australia's greatest mller, did not appear again. Metcalfe, characterised as the greatest jumper ever produced in Australia, broke tlie New Zealand high jump record of Cft 2Jin by Jin, but failed at 6ft 4in owing to spongy turf and a strong side wind. Metcalfe knew he should be capable of the latter and made four attempts, each time just touching the bar with his body. His record is 6ft 6Jin. In the broad jump Metcalfe reached 23ft 6Jin with the wind behind him. this not equalling his recent record of 24ft 6in. He also surpassed the New Zealand hop, step and jump record of 48ft 2Jin by achieving 60ft 2sin. Application is being made for records for Metcalfe, excepting for the broad jump on account of the wind being behind him. Hampson. who is considered to be the most consistent amateur sprinter in Australia, showed his outstanding ability by the way he gathered in the field to win by nearly a foot, in 100yds from J. D. Carmichael and J. MacFarlane, the New Zealand champion. His time of .10 l-ssec was most creditable under the conditions. He beat MaeFarlane by 4yds in the 220yds invitation race in 22 2-ssecr, only 1-Gsec less than at the New South Wales championships. The principal events resulted: HALF-MILE CYCLE HANDICAP. .1.
