LAWN TENNIS.
Provincial Tournament Opens. LARGE COUNTRY ENTRY. Good conditions favoured the start of the Canterbury lawn tennis championships at Wilding Park this morning, though the overnight rain had made the courts somewhat soft for the morning games. Lack of much outside competition has robbed the tournament of a great' deal of interest for spectators, but the large and representative entry from the province, in all except the men’s singles, has made it one of the most successful for some years. A pleasing feature is the large entry of country plavers. Rapid progress was made in the singles matches this morning, and though in the majority of cases the winners were not greatly troubled, there was one early flicker of interest when N. G. Norbert-Munns (Canterbury*) took C. E. Malf.roy (Wellington), the New Zealand champion, to 10-12 in the first set of their first-round match. However, the champion won the second, 6Results were:— Men’s Singles. First Round. . T ; , Patters °n beat C. G. S. Ellis by default. 6 W. S. Somerville beat A. NOTES ON THE PLAY. Malfroy Extended in Singles. N. G. Norbert-Munns (Canterbury) made C. E. Malfroy (Wellington) look to bis laurels when they met in the first round of the men’s singles. Nor-bert-Munns was right on form, and. playing hard down both lines, he had the New Zealand champion running. Malfroy was playing brilliantly in bursts, with unaccountable periods of wildness, when Norbert-Munns regained the ground he had lost. The game rapidly developed into a marathon, though the good stroking of the Canterbury man and the occasional brilliance of Malfroy kept interest going. Malfroy held the superiority long enough to win the first set 12-10, and in the second he won convincingly 6-3. Easy Passages. Among the men who had an easy passage to the second round were J. H. W. Sheppard, who was much too experienced a tactician for E. S. Dixon, and the Rev J. Watson (Rangiora), who played an attractive forcing game to beat W. H. Price. 6-0, 6-0. T. W. Patterson and D. F. Glanville went, into the second round as a result of the defaults of C. G. S. Ellis and W. R. Robinson, respectively. The default of Robinson, who was a member of the Canterbury Wilding Shield team at New Year, was a disappointment. Miss B. Gould Withdraws. After beating 'Miss C. Reese convincingly in the first round of “the women’s singles. Miss B. Gould withdrew through indisposition. This let. Miss M. Sherris, who had easily beaten Miss R. Dixon in the first, round, into the third round. A Creditable Win. D. G. Silvester (Addington) had a creditable victory over H. G. Searle, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Silvester was playing nice strokes, and his steadiness was the winning factor. Another creditable showing was that of E. Morris (Rangiora). whom H. Dymond (Canterbury representative player) beat 6-2, 6-4. Morris is a strong hitter, but be did not have an effective answer when Dymond slowed the game down. C. R. Ogier. beating B. B. Loughnan 7-5, 6-1. also scored a good win. He concentrated on Loughnan’s backhand with good effect. Cant in Form. A. R. Cant showed excellent form in the first set of his match with P. D. Hall, and the Fendalton player was well outclassed to lose 6-1. Tn the second set he had a lapse and a series of "outs” saw him struggling for points to win 8-6. He made a brilliant recovery in his second-round match, heating D. F. Glanville. 6-2, 6-3. Glanville beat Cant in last Saturday’s series of senior matches, but to-day lie was well out of the picture. Tf Cant continues in this form he should not be very far away from the championship. The Women’s Matches. Mrs ,T. D. Carl and Miss T. Poole had an easy progress into the third round i of the women’s singles. Mrs Carl beat I
Miss K. Thorp, 6-0. 6-1, and Miss Poole heat Miss F. Cannon. 6-1, 6-3. Miss M. \\ ake, the title-holder, also was not greatly troubled, beating: Mrs Bell-Kver (Sumner), 6-0, 6-1. Miss E. Rudkin had a harder struggle, beating Miss Jean Brewer (Canterbury College), 6-2, <-o. She was not playing with her usual consistency and decision, and her mistakes told against her. Miss Brewer stroked well. Miss N. Smithson also had a struggle to heat Miss B. Gresson, 7-9, 6-4. 6-4. The game lasted two hours. Miss N. Sullivan (Timaru) went into the second round with a victory over Miss E. Tipping. 6-1, 6-2. Miss Tippings strokes are good, hut she has not had much tournament play of late “ David and Goliath.” A knot of interested spectators found much to amuse them in the meeting between G. Roberts and R. Secoj-d in the first round of the boys’ singles. Roberts is toll for his age, and Secord is a diminutive youth of twelve, not much bigger than his racquet. Secord covered the ground very fast for his size, and had some quite good strokes, including a two-handed backhand, hut Roberts’s height and reach were too great an advantage, and he defeated his plucky opponent, 6-3, 6-1.
