Opening of the National Meeting. FIRST DAY'S EVENTS. ■ Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 19. The New Zealand band championship contest was opened to-day in the Town Hall. Twenty-two bands from various parts of the Dominion are competing in this year’s contest, which is one of the largest ever held. Results:— B FLAT OR BB FLAT BASS. ”Te Anau” (Ord Hume). (Judge, Mr T. Gray.) H. E. Unwin (Hastings Citizens), 96 points 1 C. Hansen (Woolston), 95 points .. 2 T. Williams (St Kilda Municipal), 94 points t T. M. Hughes (Nelson Garrison), 94 t equal 3. The judge said the basses pleased him very much. The players were the finest he had ever heard. The winner achieved a lovely, sweet tone and he sang his solo. The first five men were all G TROMBONE SOLO. •Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep” (W. Rimmer). (Judge, Mr Gray.) .T. Patterson (Nelson Garrison), 91 points 1 L. Willi com be (Dannevirke Municipal), 90 points 2 A. Shaw (Westport Municipal), 81 points 3 In this solo some of the competitors failed to achieve the full significance nf the test piece, Mr Gray said. Mathieson (Timaru Municipal). 85 points 3 Second Section, Any Other Instrument. B. Woods (Palmerston North Garrison). 91 points 1 P. Abraham (Timaru Municipal), 89 points 2 T. Denne (Waipukurau Town), 87 points 3 This section contained what the judge described as some very fine young artists. The section was divided into two, the cornets being placed in one group and all other instruments in the other. The winner of the second section is a trombonist. EUPHONIUM SOLO. “Pretty Jane” '(J. Hartman). H. Guthrie (Masterton Municipal), 98 points 1 J. M’Kay (Invercargill Civic). 96 points 2 G. Jansen (Hastings Citizens), 95 points 3 The judge (Captain Buckley) said that there had been some very close playing in this section, and that he had had difficulty in separating many of the competitors, whose quality of playing was much alike. The first and second placed men were outstanding. HYMN TEST. M’LEOD CUP. Own selection, open to A and P, grade bands. Judge, Captain Buckley.
