PERSONAL.

MINISTERIAL. The Minister of Education, the Hon R. Masters, has telegraphed to Dr D. E. Hansen, of the Christchurch Technical College, that on February 26 he will pay a visit and give an address at the college at 11 a.m. Mr W. Rodgers, stationmaster at Christchurch, has resumed duty following his annual leave. Mr W. Goodfellow left for the north on Saturday evening after a visit to the Hermitage, Mount Cook. To-day’s arrivals at the United Service Hotel included Messrs L. J. Clifford (Wellington) and R. W. M’Greath (Gore). Guests at the Royal Hotel include Messrs E. Bateman (Auckland), J. A. Breen (Harawa), M. Price and Armitage (Invercargill). Guests at the New City Hotel include Messrs C. A. Kilkelly (England), W. Kinley (Rangiora), A. B. Simpson, S. A. Manoy and W. N. Laws (Wellington).

Squadron-Leader T. M. Wilkes, Director of Air Services, arrived from the north yesterday in connection with the refresher courses being held at Wigram Aerodrome.

Dr Guy O. Shirey, doctor to the Byrd expedition, who was compelled to give up his position on account of ill-health, arrived at Port Chalmers in the Jacob Ruppert yesterday. It is Dr Shirey’s intention to return to the United States as soon as posible. He will probabl}' - sail for Panama by the first ship proceeding by that route. Mr L. C. Bowen, secretary to the Lincoln-Belmont branch of the Chicago Y.M.C.A., accompanied by his wife, arrived in Christchurch from Nelson on Saturday. They are enjoying six months’ leave of absence, touring New Zealand, and, while in Christchurch, are staying with Mrs T. E. Taylor, Cashmere.

Mr M. J. Savage, M.P. for Auckland West, Leader of the Opposition, is to arrive in Christchurch on Wednesday morning, and at noon will be given a civic welcome by the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) in the City Council Chamber. In the evening Mr Savage will address a public meeting in the Choral Hall.

Mr Frank Goldberg, of Sydney, governing director of the Goldberg Advertising Agency, Ltd., who returned yesterday from Hanmer Springs, -where he has been attending the Press Conference, will leave for the north by the ferry steamer to-night. He will return to Australia by the Wanganella, sailing from Auckland on March 2. The staff of the Bank of New South Wales on Saturday made a presentation to Mr A. H. B. Jones, the manager, who is shortly leaving for the bank’s head office to assume the duties of divisional inspector. The accountant, Mr R. H. Smith, said that the members of the staff regretted losing their present manager, and wished him and his family every happiness in New South Wales. A welcome to Mr Sydney Thompson, who has returned to Christchurch after thirty years in France, was extended at a meeting of the New Zealand Society of Artists on Saturday evening. It was hoped, said Mr Basil Honour, who presided, that Mr Thompson’s presence would give a considerable fillip to art in Christchurch. A welcome was also extended to Mr Alfred Baxter, who has returned from a visit of overseas. The Rev A. C. T. Purchas was instituted Archdeacon of Rangiora and Westland by Bishop West-Watson at St John’s Church, Rangiora, yesterday morning. Bishop West-Watson afterwards celebrated Holy Communion, Archdeacon Purchas assisting him. Before the sermon, his Lordship paid a tribute to the work of Dean Julius as Archdeacon of Rangiora and Westland, and also expressed his thanks to Mr Purchas, who had a good knowledge of both North Canterbury and Westland, for accepting the office.
