The Hon Alexander Shaw and Lady Shaw and their daughter, Miss Jean Shaw, arrived in Christchurch this morning and are staying at the United Service Hotel until Saturday. They will tour places of interest in the South Island in their own car. Miss M. Carney, Christchurch, is visiting Mrs Quigley, at Springfield. Mrs W. Webb, Fendalton, is staying with her daughter, Mrs F. G. M. Raymond, Beverley Road, Timaru. Mrs Roger Gould, Rotherham, returned yesterday from a short visit to Wellington. Miss E. Stark, Christchurch, has been spending a holiday in Queenstown. Miss Delia Lorimer left last evening for Wellington to attend the CoomberRastall wedding. Miss Ailsa Taggart, Riccarton, is visiting friends in Wellington and Palmerston North. Mr and Mrs C. Carleton, Harakeke Street, Riccarton, have returned from a visit to Milford Sound. Mrs A. Fell, Blenheim, who is the guest of her mother, Mrs Hayhurst, Ternuka, left to-day for Dunedin. Mrs Paterson, St Albans, Christchurch, is visiting her daughter, Mrs Smith, Little River. Mrs K. Exton, Main South Road, Riccarton, who has been visiting Auckland, has returned home. Mrs H. M’Keown has returned to Springfield from a visit to her parents at Temuka. Mr and Mrs H. Exton, Matipo Street, Riccarton, who have been visiting Mr and Mrs Morrison, Lower Hutt, Wei lington, have returned home. Visitors to Little River during last week-end were: Mr and Mrs W. Arnold, Burwood, Mrs Dugdale, Mrs Angus and Miss Sylvia Angus, Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Peter S. Duncan, Inver cargiil, are the guests of Mr and Mrs David H. Jones, Rolleston Street, Lin wood. Mr and Mrs P. S. Stringer, Riccarton Road, left for Wellington on Tuesday evening to attend the funeral of the late Captain S. G. Stringer. Miss Greta Clarkson, who has been abroad for several years, has returned to Christchurch and is staying with her mother, Mrs W. B. Clarksc.i, Bristol* Street. Miss H. Montgomery, Wairewa, Little River, with Miss Ruth Wynn Williams, Cashmere Hills, as pas senger, flew to Blenheim last Sunday, where they have been the guests of Mr and Mrs C. Teschemaker, Avondale Miss Montgomery arrived home yester day.
Mrs Geoffrey Kingscote, Fendalton, will leave this evening for Wellington and Rotorua. Mr and Mrs Geoffrey Pidgeon will return to Christchurch on Friday morning. Mrs Harold Johnston will arrive in Christchurch to-morrow morning to join her husband, Mr Justice Johnston. Mrs G. B. Bates, Sydney, whose husband is the captain of the Wanganella, is visiting her mother, Mrs E. Davis, Kilmore. Street. Miss Barbara Bloxam, Weston Road, who has been spending a holiday at Mount Somers and Timaru, will return to town on Sunday.
Mr and Mrs John Powell, Christchurch, have arrived in Auckland and have taken a flat at Indore, Mount Eden. Mrs E. E. Gillon, Tinakori Road. Wellington. who is touring the South Island by car, arrived in Christchurch this morning. Mrs H. Holland, of Christchurch, who has been the guest of Mrs A. R. Hosking, Mount Eden Road, Auckland, is now the guest of Lady Luke, Wellington. Mrs Marsh and Miss Sykes, Suffolk, England, who have been the guests of Mrs J. H. Hall, Papanui Road, left this morning for the Franz Josef Glacier.
Congratulations were extended to Nurse Maude, 0.8. E., on the honour conferred on her by the King, at yesterday’s meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery. Another motion expressing appreciation of her services to the poor in Christchurch, was also passed.
Further delegates to the conference of the Plunket Society in Dunedin next week from the Christchurch branch will be Mesdames O. T. J. Alpers. Henry Wvatt, John Stevenson, Neil M’Gillivray, Kenneth Ballantyne. John Tait, P. G. Greenwood, and A. R. Bloxam. Mr and Mrs Richard Studholme and children, England, who have been visiting Colonel and Mrs John Studholme, Middleton Grange, and other relatives in South Canterbury, will leave to-nfght for Wellington to join the Wanganella for Sydney. Mrs Studholme will visit her parents, Bishop and Mrs Wilson, Western Australia, before returning to England. Miss Whitcombe, who has been on the staff of the Christchurch Gas Company for the past seventeen years, is about to sever her connection with the firm. She will leave shortly on an extended visit to Auckland. Many Christchurch housekeepers have received valuable and practical assistance through Miss Whitcombe’s cookery lectures and demonstrations.
