NURSE CAYELL’S DEATH.
5 Berlin Welcomes Statement by Mr Duff Cooper. BERLIN, February 6. Mr Duff Cooper's statement that if every woman was justly executed according to the rules of warfare, it was Nurse Cavell, is given great prominence in the German newspapers. They declare that it is a noteworthy pronounce- ! ment, because “ the shooting of Edith Cavell was used for anti-German propaganda in wartime in a most un- ■ bridled manner, in order to prove that the German's made war as barbarians.” Mr Cooper's statement, it is said, conj firms the German repudiation of that ) charge. All doubt about Nurse Cavell’s | espionage activities has thus been disI per r ed. The penalty for her offence, it is i ! added, ” was, and is, death.” j Mr Dug Cooper hade the statement ; in explaining a passage in the Haig biography relating to the foolishness of ! the German military command in i ordering Nurse Cavell’s execution.
