Why Not Big Sets?

A Carden Corner.

TT is generally regarded as good business to use medium-sized sets when planting out potatoes. The best course in most working operations is generally that established after many tests, and potato planting has had more tests than most other subjects. Why is it that invariably if a very large potato be planted the result will not be satisfactory? Instead of good-sized tubers being dug, a very large quantity of small ones will be the result. The chief reason is that in the big tubers are many eyes, each keen to do Nature’s bidding. The seed tuber furnishes food until the rootlets can establish themselves and live on the plant foods in the soil. When the starchy food in the tuber is exhausted, the roots get into competition with each other and usually fail to secure the nutriment demanded, with the result that growth is checked and “marbles” predominate. With medium or “ cut ” seed competitive conditions do not obtain so severely and a good crop of better size follows. T. D. LENNIE.
