“Takina,” a gladiolus raised by Mr P. Burns, of Wanganui, and sent to the Canterbury Gladiolus Society's trial grounds by Dr A. C. M'Killop, has been granted a first-class certificate by the floral committee of the society. This is the highest honour that can be awarded, and the certificate is the first to be issued. The three spikes of this variety were massive ones with florets measuring from 84in to B*in, with seven to nine blooms open at the one time, fhe length of florescence averaged 2ft 6in. The colour is rosaline purple, lightly flecked with a darker shade. This variety received an award of merit at the Ballarat trial grounds in 1933.
