CIVIC WELCOME.

Arrival of Sanders Cup Crews. FUNCTION AT LYTTELTON. The Otago and Southland crews visiting Lyttelton to compete in the Sanders Cup contest, which will commence on Monday afternoon, were accorded a civic welcome at Lyttelton last evening. The speeches were delivered from the steps of the Colonist Hall to a gathering of about two hundred. The Lyttelton Marine Band played musical selections prior to the reception. In extending a welcome to the visitors on behalf of the residents of the port, the Mayor (Mr W. T. Lester) said that he felt very pleased to see so many present. The Wellington crew had not yet arrived, but that evening’s welcome was for them as well. There was no doubt that the Sanders Cup contests had attracted the interest of the people of the port and had put yachting on a firm footing again. During the coming week they would witness some excellent racing. ' The people of Canterbury extended their best wishes to the visitors, and would endeavour to make them as comfortable as possible and entertain them as well as give them as hard a race as possible. It would be left to the visitors to do their best to wrest the cup from Canterbury, and Canterbury would heartily congratulate them if they succeeded. Mrs E. R. M’Combs, M.P., representing the Christchurch City Council, said she had always been interested in sailing. As a girl she used to go out in a yacht in which her brother was part owner. She had done much ducking to save her head from the swinging boom, but, despite this, it had left a lasting interest. She had much pleasure, on behalf of Canterbury, of extending to the visitors their best wishes for good luck provided they left the cup with Canterbury^ Mr Harold Harris, president of the Canterbury Sailing and Power Boat Association, also extended a welcome on behalf of the association. Mr A. Challis, a delegate from Otago, in responding on behalf of the visiting crews, said that he was known as the silent member in Otago, and they should not expect very much from him, but he sincerely wished to thank the people of Lyttelton for what they were doing for them. The results of the racing remained to be seen. He trusted the best crew would win and not the best boat. Fanciers’ Club Picnic.
