MADONNA LILIES.

_The old-fashioned Madonna lily, o t Lilium candidum, is etill worth growing. It is early flowering, and for that reason should be planted early. sThe time for planting is as soon alter flowering as possible. The present is a good time, as the bulbs are more or less dormant owing to the dry weather, but a wet spell would start them growing. The bulbs should not be planted deep,

6o long as they are below the surface they are deep enough, but when planting, the bulbs are best planted with about 4in of soil on top; this allows for the soil to consolidate. In heavy soils they can be more shallow, with an inch or so of sand on top. They do well in semi-shade, and will also grow in full sun, but the flowers do jjot last so well when grown in full sfln.
