The earliest proposal to use electricity for communicating signals was made in 1753 in the “ Scots Magazine ” by a writer who signed himself “ C.M.” In 1811, Sommerring, a German anatomist, made a telegraph apparatus. The first instrument which came into practical use was that of Gauss and Weber at Gottingen in 1833. Four years later the germ from -which the present system has been developed was independently discovered by Steinlieil, of Munich; Wheatstone, of London; and Morse, of Charleston, in the United dates from 1837.
