£6O MISSING.
Mr Ulm’s Passenger Flight Takings. HIDDEN IN A SOCK. Per Press Association. HAWERA, January 15. The sum of £6O disappeared mysteriously from the monoplane Faith in Australia between the time of departure from Levin on Thursday morning and the conclusion of passenger flights at Hawera on Thursday evening. The money represented portion of the proceeds of passenger flights conducted at Levin on Wednesday. It was rolled up in a sock and hidden in the pocket of a coat belonging to a member of the ground crew of the 'plane employed as booking clerk. On leaving Levin the coat was thrown into the baggage rack of the cabin. Immediately the ’plane arrived at Hawera the gear stowed in the cabin was removed to the hangar for safety, but the coat evidently was forgotten. Between 200 and 300 people were in and out of the cabin in the course of passenger flights, and the loss of the money was not discovered until six o’clock in the evening, when the day’s takings were being checked. Nothing was said about the loss. The Faith in Australia left next morning for Wanganui. It was not until on the point of departure of the ’plane from Wanganui for Westport on Saturday that any complaint was made, and a note was sent by Pilot Allan to the police at Hawera, where inquiries began.
