BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

Meeting of the Lyttelton Council. The Lyttelton Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr W. T. Lester) presiding. The secretary of the General Labourers’ Union, Miss M. Howard, wrote informing the council that the union had invited all labourers in the employ of (he council to join the union. There had been no response and the union asked the council to take steps to see that the men complied with the preference clause and became members. It was decided to ask the Borough Engineer to bring the matter under the notice of the A letter was received from the committee of the Lyttelton District High School asking the council to declare a public holiday 7 on February 15 on the occasion of the schools and trades picnic at. The Canterbury Sailing and Power Boat Association appealed for a donation towards the expense of the forthcoming Sanders Cup contest to be held at Lyttelton in February. A sum of £3 3s was granted towards the Cornwell Cup contest and £5 5s towards the Sanders Cup contest. The Mount Herbert County Cotincil asked for the assistance of the council in asking the Main Highways Board to declare the Teddington-Charteris BavDiamond Harbour and Purau Roads a main highway. The Mayor and Borough Engineer were appointed representatives to attend the meeting of the board which will be held in Christchurch this month.
