NEWS FROM THE PORT.

Council Discusses Plight of Unemployed. The Mayor (Mr W. T. Lester) in opening the monthly meeting of the council last evening stated that a deputation from the Lyttelton relief workers had waited on him at the Council Chamber last Friday asking the council to support a protest against the action of the Unemployment Board in reducing the wages -of relief workers. Councillor R. Fenton said he was in sympathy with the unemployed; they certainly were not receiving too much. He moved that the council protest to the Unemployment Board against the recent reduction in relief wages; that the council be associated with any other local body favouring the restoration of the cut, and that the Christchurch City Council be asked to convene a conference of representatives of local bodies in favour of the restoration. Councillor A. H. Fowler seconded the motion. Councillor J. N. Neville: I think we are passing a motion that will be of little value unless a conference is convened. Councillor Fowles said that the council should get into communication with the Christchurch City Council or the Mayor so as to associate itself with them. It was decided that in the event of a conference with the Christchurch City Council or other body the Mayor and Councillor R. Fenton represent the council. Councillors Absent. Only five of the nine councillors attended the meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council held last evening. Councillor D. E. L. Collett and Councillor E. Green are on holiday. Councillor A. G. Sinclair is expected to return to Lyttelton to-day from a business trip to the Chatham Islands, and Councillor A. T. E. Miller was absent on account of illness.
