TROTTING NOTES.

S®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®®;*]!*! for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting are due to-day. at 9 p.m. * * * * Nominations for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close on January IS at noon. * * * * Acceptances for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting are oue on January 19, at 5 p.m. HARD PROPOSITION. Free Logan, now located at Epsom, is doing regular work, but if his record 6\-er the last twelve months is to be accepted he is not going to be a good proposition. On one day of the recent Cup meeting at Auckland he was well away, but he soon petered out, and if he is to win it will be over short journeys. In addition to not being a stayer he is not always reliable at the barrier. * * * * The Wellington trainer. L. O. Thomas, is perse A 7 ering with the aged mare. Blue and Gold. She showed a good turn of speed in her races at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting and is racing more solidly than previously. She is by The Triumph from Kola Bell. RETURNED TO OWNER. Peter Pirate has been returned to his owner. Mr W. N. Paul. The son of Peter Moko worked sufficiently well before the Cup meeting at Auckland to encourage many to give him a chance of picking up a stake at the fixture, but he raced badly, and Avas clearly outclassed in his engagements. In heaA-y going Peter Pirate might be able to still win a good race, but he is not improA-ing, and with so many younger horses about on good marks the task set him is always very difficult. * * * * Flintlock, who finished second to Gold Claim in the Probationers’ Handicap at Wellington on Saturday, is a half-brother to Guy Zolock, being by Nelson Bingen from Kate Zolock. Flintlock is a stylish six-year-old pacer in L. O. Thomas’s stable, and promises to train on to win races at the autumn meetings. RETIREMENT OF BENEFICE. All efforts to prepare the pacing mare Benefice for further racing haA’ing proA'ed futile, she has been definitely retired. Benefice has proved a good stake-earner, and has won at all distances, her best performances haAring been registered over [a mile and a half at Epsom. She also raced well oA*er two miles, and has a record of 4min 33isec. Benefice a vi 11 be sent to the matrons’ paddock, and, being bred on the best linss, by Rey de Oro from Bequest, she should proA’e a fine brood mare. DI FF E R ENT TRAC KS. The gulf of difference betAveen the track work at Addington and race form at Wellington of the trotting gelding Carl presents a difficulty Avhich falls to the lot of trainers and the speculating public. In his work Carl trotted solidly, not that he never made a break, but his errors Avere few. At the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting he Avas started in tAvo races. He neither Avould begin nor trot Avhen he did decide to move on the journey. Carl came about six months ago from Australia, Avhere he was regarded as a genuine performer. Whether the change of footing at Addington, Avhich is a dirt circuit, to the turf at Hutt Park was responsible for his inglorious displays on Saturday only time will tell. ABOUT KOHEWAII. The onl} r straight-out trotter from Auckland engaged at Wellington Avas KoheAvah, who had not raged since the Cambridge and Northland meetings in May. Before retiring for the season, the Peterwah mare shoAved splendid form, and at Hawera Avas responsible for a striking performance in beating Nell Volo and going 3min 33 2-ssec. After winning on the second day at Hawera Kohewah started at Cambridge in a mile and fiA-e furlongs race from 132 yards behind, and, trotting in perfect style, Avon nicely. KoheAvah is a trotter of more than average ability, and she requires only to be thoroughly attuned to haA’e good prospects of early success. NEW PROGRAMME The Invercargill Trotting Club has framed an attractive programme for its tAvo-dav meeting, which will take place on March 2 and 3. The Invercargill Trotting Cup is worth 200 soats. and is for horses that can do 4min 45sec or hetter. The driver of the Avinner of this race will receiVe a whip which has been donated by Mr W. Crawford. The Southland Handicap, of 180 sovs, is the next item of importance. It is also for horses that can compass tAvo miles in 4min 45sec. The Members’ Handicap, of 110 sovs., to be decided on the first day. is a 2min 55sec class, one mile and a quarter; and the mile saddle race, the Takitimu Handicap, is a 2min 24sec class. On the second day the Au Handicap, which is endoAved Avith 105 soa-s., is for horses that can sprint eight furlongs in 2min 19sec or faster. Nominations for all events will close on February 16, at 5 p.m BIG IN CON D LIT OX. There is no more promising novice pacer at Epsom than Star Pronto, but he is not being hurried, and for weeks past A. Dyer has been content to potter about the track with the black gelding. When raced last season Star Pronto rarely left the barrier correctly, but he showed sufficient speed to warrant the prediction that \A-hen he became settled doAvn to racing he avouM give those he might meet a merry time. He was strapped up one morning last week, but only given steady pacing. It may be that his OAvner-trainer Avill Avait till the country circuit of meetings opens before he thinks seriously of going after the money, but when he does he will get some.
