Showy Ampelopus.
A Garden Corner.
EXCLUDING IVY, there is no plant that fills a want so well as does the Virginian creeper, otherwise A. veitchi. Its usefulness consists of its ability to cover brick or concrete walls rapidly with a close mantle of green, attaching the ascending branches by
means of aerial roots, which cling tenaciously. In the autumn the plant furnishes more than its share of the russet glories of that period, at its best the leaves turning a rich scarlet before dropping oft. There is quite a variety of these vines, differing in the shape and colour of the leaves, but the species here shown is most popular for brickw’ork. A near relative in Vitis 4'aignette makes a splendid climber for covering an arbour or large trellis. T. D. LENNIE.
