SURF COMPETITIONS.
New Brighton Club Holds Owies Cup Event. The New Brighton Surf Bathing and Life Saving Club held surf events on the beach yesterday afternoon as an attraction of the New Brighton Beach and Beauty Carnival. The Owies Cup, a . five-man alarm event, a canoe race, surf race and flag race were decided before a record attendance of the public. Con- | ditions were excellent for surfing, with a | light easterly wind and a moderate surf. The canoe race around the pier attracted considerable attention and the spectators were treated to plenty of thrills. Some of the canoes were upset, but all eventually reached the beach safely’. The donor of the cup, Captain A. W. Owies, in presenting the trophy, | congratulated the teams on their performances. The times had been the best for twelve years. The officials were:—— Judges, Messrs H. F. Feast and L. C. Matson; timekeepers. Messrs C. Can Idwell and A. L. Tucker: marshal, Mr C. A. Cooper- referee, Mr C. W. Smith. The events resulted as follows: — OWLES CUP. No. 1 team—R. Sliillito (support), J. Stevens (belt). .J. Govvan (line), J. Cocks (reel). H. Orme (patient), 66 points I No. 2 team—N. Stokes (support), A. Bryant (belt), A. Stokes (line), R. Pock son (reel). W. Gulliford (patient), 65£ points 2 No 4 team —A. Ansley (support), K. Ansley (belt), T. Carson (line), N. Angel (reel). R. Cooper (patient), 613 points 3 Four teams competed. SURF RACE. A. T. F. Stokes (giving SOsec) ...... 1 N. Herrick (giving SOsec) 2 A. Stevens (giving 20sec) . 3 j Six competed. j Canoe Race—A. T.
