EIGHT-OAR ROWING.
Race at Christchurch Regatta.
The public of Christchurch are not often given the thrill of witnessing eight-oar racing. Only once has there been an opportunity, and that was in 1929, when the interprovincial eight-oar championship was rowed on Lyttelton Harbour.
The Canterbury selectors intend trying out two eight-oar crews, Probables v. Possibles, at the Christchurch Regatta on January 27. They will race at the end of the regatta programme, and the eight men to represent the province will then be chosen. The course selected this year by the Regatta Club is at Stewart’s Gully, the starting line being at. Kairaki where the Cam River enters the Waimakariri. Stewart’s Gullv as a picnic resort is very attractive, and from the river hank an excellent view of the races from start to finish may he obtained. The finishing line will be about lOovds short of the railway bridge. The first race is at 1.15 p.ni. and the eights will he rowed at 4.15. There will be fifteen minutes’ interval between each race.
