W e have started a crosscut at the 70 feet level, west of the south branch reef, at the extreme end south. We have advanced 5 feet and are in quartz stringers, carrying zinc blende. During the holidays the main level was repaired in places, and the new reef west of the east crosscut in the tunnel level was prospected. Prospects here look encouraging, the quartz carrying a fair amount of zinc blende, which in this mine is always an indication of values. No ore has so far been crushed. Addison’s Plat. WESTPORT, January 10. The Addison’s Sluicing Company's return for the week ended December 2 4 was 260 z 2dwt of retorted gold. Work after the holidays was resumed on Monday. Waitahu Operations. The "Waitahu Gold Mining Company, Ltd., reports that sluicing operations were resumed on Monday. The stripping of the top material of the first paddock having been completed, elevating operations on the bottom wash are now being carried out, and ample water is available. During the holidays a small staff was employed driving a winze for 32ft on the quartz reef exposed in the main tunnel (No. 2 contract). The reef appears to be making, the width having improved to 36in. Samples of the stone are in course of transit to Dunedin for assay. Modern Prospecting'. For a period of two years from the date of commencing operations, states the “Otago Daily Times,” the returns per cubic yard won by the Okarito Company’s dredge have approached within a decimal of one penny of the values stated by Mr R. T. Stewart in his report on the claim. It is on record also that the gold obtained from the ground being worked by the Rimu Flat Company’s dredge near Hokitika has for several years been within one halfpenny per cubic yard of the values ascertained bv drilling. New Cornish Point. The directors of the New Cornish Point Mines, Ltd., have accepted the tender of Messrs Macale, Tulley and party to drive the incline shaft at the Kawarau end of the company’s claim. The contractors have already made a start. Mr Moye, the mine manager, lias opened out the face, and has placed in position the first three sets of timber, and power has been laid on to the claim. All buildings have been removed from the Clutha side of the claim, states the Dunedin “Star,” and everything is now in readiness for the work being pushed on with expedition. From the plans supplied by the geophysical survey, bottom should be struck when the incline dip has penetrated 120 ft, and two months should see the accomplishment of this work Cromwell Goldfields. Messrs Alan G. Familton (chairman) and John Penny, of Christchurch, directors of the Bell-Hooper Cromwell Gold, Ltd., spent a few days in Cromwell recently, and Mr Penny, who is also a director in the New Cornish Point Mines, Ltd., expressed himself as pleased with the progress being made. It is reported that the Imperial Prospecting Syndicate of Auckland has disposed of its interests at Bendigo to a Christchurch party, states the Dunedin “Star.” Mr J. L. Stewart Wright, of Cromwell, who negotiated the sale, states that the prospecting work carried out by the vendors has disclosed the presence of a sulphide lode, showing an assay of 13dwt to the ton. Every indication suggests that Bendigo will yet be the scene of a great deal of activity in the immediate future
