OTAGO SCORE A GOOD WIN.

Canterbury Batsmen Make Better Showing in Second Innings. PROSPECTS FOR PLUNKET SHIELD. A S A RESULT of the Plimket Shield matches which con--LjL eluded yesterday, Otago and Auckland have each scored eight points towards possession of the trophy. These teams meet in Auckland over the New Year holidays, and a game of exceptional interest should he witnessed. Roth have strong, all-round elevens. At the Basin Reserve yesterday, Auckland defeated Wellington by 178 runs. Mathesoivs Fine bowling was outstanding. Otago defeated Canterbury at Lancaster Park by 97 runs. The borne team’s second innings closed for 339, of which Bellamy contributed 132. A feature of the day's play was a fine partnership between Bellamy and Cromb, which added 116 for the sixth wicket.

The Canterbury team, which is the same as that which played Otago, with the exception that G. 11. Stringer replaces A. W. Roberts, who is not available for the tour, will leave for the north to-night with Mr E. E. Luttrell as manager. They will play Wellington on December 30, and January 1,2 and 3. A Losing Fight. Canterbury waged a losing fight against Otago on the final day, and practically the only real interest in the game lay in the number of runs by which they would be beaten. It did not seem possible that over four hundred runs could be scored on a wicket which had experienced three showers of rain during the match, and also had had over eight hundred runs made on it. The impossible was almost accomplished. however, as the result of the splendid partnership between I. B. Cromb and F. Bellamy, which turned •what promised to be a heavy defeat into a loss by the small margin of 97 runs. But for the failure of batsmen who were expected to make runs, Canterbury might have repeated their performance of scoring four hundred runs in a second innings and winning a Plunket Shield game. Although the accuracy of the Otago bowling might have been offered as an excuse for the failure of these batsmen, it did not entirely justify their disappointing performances. Both Cromb and Bellamy showed that it was possible to score with strokes in front of the wicket and that the bowling could be mastered. Bellamy’s Form. Bellamy took a long time to score his first century in Plunket Shield cricket, but the state of the game prevented him from taking the risks of club cricket. As a result, his batting lacked the freedom which is the most attractive part of his play. Occasionally, and to a greater degree when he was nearing his century, he treated the crowd to some delightful oft-drives, made with all the left-hander's grace and wrist work. There were times when he did not appear at home against the bowling, mainly owing to his habit of playing forward to short balls. As an innings against odds, however, it was one of the best played at Lancaster Park. There were sixteen fours in his 132. Cromb showed up the other batsmen in the team by the confident way in which he hade his 74 runs. When he was at the wicket the Otago bowling did not appear as formidable as the earlier batsmen had made it seem. There was aggression behind every shot, and all were placed with confidence and ease. The hook shot, which has proved his downfall since he returned from England, was reserved for the right occasion and the right ball. Cromb made some very forceful drives straight down the wicket, but his best scoring shot wras a square cut behind

cover. lie gave one hard chance halfway through his innings. Had he got right on top of the ball from -which he w-as caught, Canterbury’s total might have assumed different proportions. Hadlee Has Promise.

Hadlee batted soundly till he pulled a ball up to leg and was well caught. His performance in the first innings, and the assurance with which he faced the bowling in the second innings, mark him as a batsman who will go far in representative cricket. The Otago bowling was backed tip by fielding in marked contrast to that of Canterbury. On that account, Badcock and Dunning were able to bowl more than fifty overs each for fewer than one hundred runs. Badcock came near to breaking his record for first-class cricket; he bowled no fewer than sixty-four overs yesterday, twenty-six of them maidens, to take three wickets for 94 runs. He commanded respect from the batsmen at all times. Dunning, who bowled fiftythree overs, took five wickets for 95 runs. He kept an excellent length, gained a certain amount of off spin, a:;d at times kicked disconcertingly. OTAGO. First innings 353 Second Innings. A. Knight. 121111411232331113, lbw, b Cromb 32 V. G.
