ST ALBANS BATHS.

Will be Ready for N.Z. Championships. PROVISION OF STANDS. | Work is going ahead satisfactorily at the St Albans swimming baths and there is every likelihood that they will be ready for the New Zealand swimming championships early in February. The actual bath has been completed for some time and it is intended to fill it for the first time next Thursday. The water will come from an artesian well which is down 270 ft. The inlet pipe is of 4in bore and it will take in the vicinity of twenty-four hours to fill the bath. For the outlet, two pipes of 4in and 6in will be used, the water from the smaller one going into the storm channel and from the other pipe into the sewer. This morning men were engaged in putting the finishing touches on the bath. Besides this, there is still a large amount of work to be done, such as levelling off, the erection of fences and seating accommodation. It is proposed to make permanent seating accommodation for between 500 and 600. and, with additional temporary accommodation, somewhere in the vicinity of 1000 people will be able to watch the championships. Originally it was intended to make an embankment similar to the one at Lancaster Park but lack of spoil made it necessary to drop the proposal. A sun-bathing space will be erected at the head of the bath and there will also be the usual high and low diving boards! A fence Oft high will surround . the bath. Most of the men are at pre- j sent on holiday and the task of level- i ling off will not begin until after the I New Year holidays.

“It is proposed at a later date to set up a board of control but what the personnel will be I don’t know,” said Mr F. J. Prouting, chairman of the Baths Committee, this morning. “ The citizens, the local swimming club and the City Council are likely to be among those represented on the board.” Mr Prouting added that the opening would probably be held early in February before the swimming championships took place.
