LAUNCH AFIRE.
Canterbury Men’s Narrow Escape. Per Press Association. BLENHEIM, December 27. Two visitors, Bruce Forsyth, of Wellington and formerly of Christchurch, and Desmond Johnson, of Oxford, Canterbury, had an unenviable experience at Pelorus Sound on Saturday night. News which has just reached Blenheim is that the pair chartered the- 30-foot launch Rata at Havelock and set out for Kenepuru, giving a lift to two other men. At about ten o’clock, near St Omer, the launch caught fire. Forsyth, who was in the eneine-room, had to jump overboard to extinguish his burning clothes. As the launch was then running ahead, there was difficulty in picking him up. Finally this was achieved and the launch was then beached and the fire was extinguished after a long fight. The party had to spend the night on the beach in heavy rain. Forsyth and Johnson are now in the Picton Hospital undergoing treatment for burns. The launch engine was badly damaged and the engine-room burned out.
